Garrett Furlong was born in the parish of Adamstown near Wexford in County Wexford, Ireland, around 1792. A labourer by trade, he enlisted into the 44th Regiment of Foot at Wexford on 2 April 1804 aged eighteen. He served for more than twenty-two years with the regiment, participating in the Peninsular War campaigns of Fuentes d'Onor, Badajoz and Salamanca before fighting at Waterloo in 1815. He was discharged in November 1824 suffering from pulmonary and rheumatic complaints, his conduct being described as "excellent". Garrett Furlong died on 18 April 1861 aged sixty-nine. His Waterloo Medal and Military General Service Medal with three clasps survive in the collection of the Essex Museum.
